Independent Waterford TD apologises for displaying election message on Waterford hospital building

Waterford Independent TD Matt Shanahan has apologised for displaying a large illuminated election advertisement on the gable end of the palliative care wing of University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
Despite the controversy over the laser display projected from a van parked nearby, Mr Shanahan initially defended the action on the basis of being “fair political commentary”.
“All political parties have repeatedly used the campuses of SETU [South East Technological University] and UHW for their political presentations,” added the TD, who was first elected in 2020.
The illumination was displayed for approximately 90 minutes and “could not disturb or be seen in any way by resident patients”, he said.
In response to negative reaction, especially on social media, he later apologised and took down his posts on the issue.
Wicklow Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore said on X: “Using the gable wall of a palliative care unit as an electoral advertising space is in no way acceptable.”
In a statement to WLR News, Mr Shanahan said he wished to apologise, adding:
“I regret any upset caused. My activity was solely directed at keeping UHW and allied services at the forefront of our regional political debate.”
Management at UHW said it was made aware on Wednesday evening of a projected image on the exterior of the Dunmore Wing. “After engagement with the parties involved the projection of the image ceased and the vehicle involved vacated the UHW campus.” it said.
It said any activity of this nature should be conducted outside the boundaries of the hospital campus, “and respect the privacy and dignity of UHW patients, visitors and staff”.
